There are such a vast variety of nail art designs you can choose from but it seems that out of all one manages to stand out and that is French manicure. How to do your own French manicure might sound difficult but with the right guidance and the right tips one can become a master of this technique.

What is a French manicure?

French manicure is a manicure style which is characterized by a white tip nail covered with a transparent pinkish top coat which offers the nail a healthy and elegant look. The top coat can vary in color it can have purple influences or no coloration at all depending on personal preference. The basic thing is to allow the nails to have a natural look that offers the hand a very elegant yet simplistic appearance. Tracing the exact contour of the tip of the nail is quite difficult for beginners this is why a few tricks have been developed, so beginners can too have a chance to develop a skill and create themselves the French manicure of their dreams.

How to do your own French manicure?

When trying to do your own manicure it is necessary to have the right utensils. A nail clipper, a nail file, a cuticle pusher and nail polishes are all the products you need and most women have these already as they are indeed must haves. Clip your nails the same size and file them in the desired shape, whether it's squared or rounded. The nails need to have a certain length, short short nails will not look attractive with this type of manicure this is why usually women choose to grow out their nails. All nail polish designs look better if created on longer nails.

It is very important to adapt the French white tip to the shape of the nail this is why usually square nails are easier to work with. The bluntness of the nail can work with an equally blunt drawn line which is much easier to create than a perfectly curved line which is the option for oval and rounded shaped nails.

French manicure for square shaped nails

Creating this manicure style on square shaped nails is quite easy as one can turn to a trick that will not fail you. Using a little bit of scotch tape separate the tip of the nail in a uniform straight line parallel to the tip, starting from one corner of the nail to the other. This will allow you to apply the white matte nail polish flawlessly. Remove the scotch tape before the nail polish dries as this will allow the line to remain perfectly straight. After all the nail tips have been coated it is essential to wait until the white nail polish dried completely. The top coat applied depends on your personal preference; you can use a pinkish, violet or clear top coat. Make sure that the top coat are a bit transparent to allow the white nail tip to look fabulous.

TIP: for a touch of glamor use a glittery gold or silver nail polish that features a thin applicator. Line the transition of the white line to the bare nail with your favorite color and this will make your nails look fabulously hot. Apply the top coat afterwards.

For oval or round shaped nails

Oval or square cut nails are very popular this year but creating a French manicure on this nail shape will be a bit more difficult especially for a beginner. Take the white nail polish and starting with your thumb line gently from one side of the nail to the other. The line should start where the nail starts to grow out of the skin and follow the natural curve of the nail. After the white nail polish has dried apply the top coat that suits a French manicure.

TIP: if the line doesn't turn out perfect don't panic; take a q tip (or a pen corrector) and dab one side in nail polish remover. Using that side gently remove the mistake, thus creating a perfectly curved line.

Practice, practice, practice! And you will become a master at doing your own French style manicure which is a manicure style perfect for any type of occasion from casual to formal as its simplicity is unrivaled.
