Those who naturally have curly or wavy hair are often faced with the frustrating problem of developing frizzy hair. Frizzy hair is defined as being a hair condition that is determined by the hair's inability to retain moisture. Although genetics is one of the major culprits of frizzy hair the causes of frizzy hair are much more varied. Using hair care products that contain a high percentage of alcohol or overuse of hair styling products, an excessively humid environment, an imbalance in the PH of the hair, coloring, bleaching or perming and other types of treatments that damage the hair follicle, a poor diet, certain types of medication can all contribute to the problem. Keeping frizzy hair under control is not an easy task however the following strategies can definitely help.

Cut down on chemical hair treatments as much as possible to avoid making the problem worse. Chemical treatments damage the hair making the hair follicle unable to retain moisture. Paired with the negative effect that external conditions such as humidity, ultraviolet rays and wind, these treatments can considerably aggravate the problem.

Avoid washing your hair every day. Shampoos strip the natural protective oils from the hair, making it more prone to dryness and therefore increasing the risk of developing hair frizzles.

It is also recommended to choose a shampoo that contains moisturizing agents and that is suitable for your hair type. A deep conditioner can help you minimize hair frizziness as long as you choose it wisely. As far as conditioners are concerned there is no universal advice that suits everyone. Many people swear by leave in conditioners to control hair frizzziness but ultimately every person is able to find the right conditioner only trough the process of trial and error. Rinsing the hair with cold water will help close the cuticle, making the hair less prone to developing frizz.

Excessive blow drying can also contribute to the problem and therefore limiting the use of blow dryers can have a beneficial impact.

Even rubbing your hair with a towel can make the problem worse do make sure that you only pat the hair gently in order to remove excess water. If you must use a blow drier use the diffuser to minimize hair movement. Use a wide tooth comb to brush your hair and use your fingers to get rid of tangles instead of using a brush on wet hair.

Hot oil treatments have proven to be successful in controlling hair frizz. Coconut oil is well known for its ability to fight hair frizz and give the hair a smooth appearance.

A weekly coconut oil massage is an effective solution for dealing with this frustrating problem. In addition to the hot oil treatment applying shea butter directly on the hair can be an effective solution especially on humid day when the seems to aggravate.

Last but not least, a proper diet is a very important aspect we must consider for a smooth healthy hair. A varied diet rich in essential nutrients is not a quick fix when dealing with frizzy hair but the long term effects are definitely visible. Make sure to include in your diet foods that contain B vitamins, lecithin, as well as essential fatty acids and high quality proteins. Also don't forget to hydrate the hair from the inside as well by making sure you drink enough water daily.
