An indispensable item in our makeup kit, the right concealer can help us solve a variety of beauty problems that can impact our self-esteem. Dark under eye circles,blemishes, acne scars, freckles, broken capillaries or unsightly marks can all greatly diminished to the point of becoming invisible if we know how to put our artful skills to work. However in order to ensure complete success the right type of concealer must be chosen.

Types of concealers

Concealers can be divided into a variety of categories. Depending on the form of presentation concealers can be divided in liquid concealers, cream concealers or solid (stick) concealers each one being recommended for various problems.

Generally liquid concealers are recommended for those that have a dry, sensitive skin, cream concealers are considered the best foundation for all the skin types, while stick concealers are preferred due to the fact that they provide the best coverage.

Cream concealers are often preferred by those who aim to have a more natural looking make-up style but have the disadvantage of leaving a little oily residue on the skin similar to liquid concealers. For oily skin the best type of concealer is a solid one which doesn't leave any oily residue on the skin compared to the other types of concealer. Many consumers choose to purchase a waterproof concealer especially during the summer months when concealers tend to wear off faster than usual.

Color

Selecting the right shade of concealer is just as important if not more important then selecting the right type of concealer. There are several tints of concealers depending on the skin tone.

There are different tints you can choose from depending on whether you have a warm or a cool complexion. The colors range from pink and peachy tones, yellow to green tones each one having different functions.

As a general rule it's best to try to choose a shade that is as close to your natural skin tone color as possible varying one or two tones in intensity.

A difference of more than two tones wil l most likely look unnatural. On the other hand,depending on the skin problems you are trying to conceal you might need multiple types of concealers.

For example for concealing dark under eye circles a yellow toned concealer should be used to lighten the area. On the other hand if your goal is to banish reddish spots than opting for a green based concealer is the ideal choice. Because red and green are complimentary colors when mixed together they neutralize each other solving the problem and contributing to a flawless appearance.

Additional tips

Always test the concealer shade before purchasing one. Testing can be best done on areas such as the back of the neck, just below the ear.

Keep in mind the fact that you will most likely need a different concealer in summer when your skin color changes than in winter

Opt for highly pigmented concealers if you need to cover blemishes or scars

If when applied the concealer seems too heavy try applying a little eye cream to solve the problem
